DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 2. – You know Dempsey never was as popular as he was after he had lost the championship. Well, that’s just the way with Florida.
And, like Dempsey, they still got the same things that made ’em great, one time. The panic weeded the punks out; all the regulars are down here as usual.
You know it’s a pleasure to meet these people when they haven’t got a map in their hands. Now they are trying to please you instead of sell you.

From a Couple of States that Can Afford to be Generous.
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 3. – Had breakfast this morning with John D. Rockefeller, for which I received a fine breakfast and a brand new dime. Went out with him and watched him play eight holes of golf, for which I received another dime.
Made 20 cents clear. Received more jokes from him than I gave, as he is certainly keen and has a great sense of humor.
Had a very pleasant morning and would have stayed longer, but he run out of dimes. I am trying to get him to come to California for his second hundred years.
Who else will give me a dime to eat with them?

MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 4. – We will stop those Chinese from fighting among themselves if we have to kill them to do it.
The Reading and Rambling Mayor.
MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 5. – Say, where do some of these birds get the idea that Florida has blown up? Why, say, they are going strong down here. The lot- buying period is over, but now they are settled down to work and common sense and they are getting in fine shape.
It’s the most beautiful weather you ever saw in your life here now—everybody walking around in Summer clothes and bathing and fishing and golfing. Of course, the Mayors here don’t stack up with the California-type of Mayors, but outside of that they give us quite a run. The main place where we got ’em licked is in the Summer. California is better as a Summer resort than it is as a Winter one; but it’s warmer here in the Winter than in California.
But don’t start in feeling too sorry for these Floridians. They are getting along mighty fine. I see by this morning’s paper that California had an earthquake yesterday. These papers here just keep earthquakes set up in type all the time, and it goes in daily that Cal has had one.
Well—just so we don’t have one out there.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Feb. 6. – See by the Florida papers today that California had another earthquake yesterday. I rushed right down to The Miami News to see what details they had, for my family was all out there. In looking it up in the pressroom we couldn’t find any details, but we found the story on the press of the earthquake that we are having today, and that will be in tomorrow’s paper, so I am not going to get excited till next Friday’s earthquake. That’s when they report a big one.
Will Rogers, The Mayor of an Unshaken Town.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 7. – I am here in the only town in America where two world’s series sporting events are held. The outdoor, under ashade checker championship and the horseshoe pitching finals are here.
It’s the greatest climate in the world for open-air checkers. You can get into the king row here before you can make a move in other climates. And the mule-slipper heaver can do more with a horseshoe than a manicurist can with a drunk.
I’ll have to get some grounds for these games out in old Beverly. We can play ’em while they are sleeping.
